Letter from the Principal

Guuwaa’dzi,

All of us at Haak’u Community Academy are very excited about the 2022-2023 School Year.

Our school community - students, families, and staff - has shown unwavering resilience and strength of character through the trials and tribulations brought on by the pandemic. We are now more focused and committed than ever to making sure our students have a productive, nurturing, and meaningful experience at HCA.

Some highlights for the coming year:

Teachers: Almost our entire instructional staff is returning, including our outstanding teachers.

Students: After-school activities will begin again, as will the Student Council and the Character Counts Students of the Month. Resuming athletics will be determined by pandemic conditions and the willingness of other schools to compete.

Literacy: A central focus for this year will be on literacy - reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We have invested in a new ELA textbook (paper and online) that offers a wide range of literacy experiences, along with the capability of providing individualized learning. We also will continue to utilize programs concentrating on literacy: Read Live Naturally, Accelerated Reader, Moby Max, and SPIRE. Our librarian, Rita Vargas, will continue to provide books, resources, instructional materials, and reading circles to our students and staff. In addition, a literacy grant will allow us to give away books to all of our students, as well as host family literacy nights if the pandemic allows.

Lastly, we have brought on a reading interventionist, who will work with students daily in small group and one-on-one settings.

Acoma Language and Culture: Robert Patricio and Gail Clemons will lead our efforts in integrating Acoma language and culture into our school day.

Conferences: After a successful first year, Student-Led Conferences will be held again in the spring. There are also two dates set aside for Parent/Teacher Conferences in the fall and the winter.

Covid Policies and Procedures: Our Covid Policies and Procedures will remain the same as last school year. All students and staff must provide proof of vaccination and a booster. Staff will be tested every Monday, and students will be chosen randomly by the nurse to be tested. KN95 or N95 masks will be required for every individual in the building.

As always, your questions, comments, and suggestions are always welcome. You can reach me by email, text, cell, or the office phone.
